A normal phenomenon that poses no risk.<\/p>\n
In recent days, increased quantities of phytoplankton have appeared on the shores of the Maliac Gulf, but also in other areas of Greece (Pagasitikos and Thermaikos Gulf). Phytoplankton is not a pollutant, since it comes from the natural marine environment and appears at times (as now) to be particularly increased depending on temperature changes and various other factors. The presence of plankton is a natural phenomenon that usually occurs in the sea after winters with heavy rainfall, as has been the case in recent months, combined with a sudden change in weather conditions, from heavy rainfall to strong sunshine and rising temperatures. Apart from the unsightly appearance of the coastline, the phenomenon does not pose any risk to human health, except for those who swim within the plankton areas, where skin irritation may occur. Given the absence of contaminants and factors dangerous to human health, swimming in areas where the phenomenon is not present is safe.<\/p>\n
Lina D.
