Food additives and preservatives
Additives are substances added to foods to achieve a technological effect, usually to preserve or enhance the taste, appearance or other properties of the food. These include colours, sweeteners, thickening agents, flavour enhancers, preservatives, etc.
Preservatives, in particular, are substances added to products such as foods and beverages for the purpose of preventing spoilage by microbial growth or undesirable chemical changes.
